Mazano Semwayo is a London based digital artist with a focus on machine learning and 3D art. As of late, his work has discussed problems with coded biases and the new forms of inequality that the digital age has brought. Through experimentation with machine learning it is possible to uncover problems and shortcomings that could not be predicted otherwise. The pieces he has on display are portraits made by a generative adversarial network that recreates basic drawings in the style of a human face input. Because the AI was trained using a limited dataset of just a few faces, it created contorted and biased results. Oversights such as these are a very real danger of machine learning, especially when working with artificial intelligences that make decisions for large groups of people.
